The award-winning project PLAYGROUND of photographer Jeroen Hofman portrays Dutch training grounds where the Fire Department, the Police and the Military are trained in realistic scenarios. In surrealistic ghost towns the emergency services try to prepare for what is factually unknowable: the future. Within the boundaries of this 'playground' the chaos seems controllable for a moment; even if only for the duration of the exercise. Hofman has now compiled these pictures taken the the last few years from atop a cherry picker into a book. It's a A3-sized, hard cover with dust jacket, containing 130 pages and 64 pictures. The preface is by Prof. Dr. Pieter van Vollenhoven and the text accompanying the pictures is by a NRC journalist in collaboration with safety expert Prof. Rob de Wijk. This is a 1000-copy edition. The first 150 copies have already been sold through numbered subscription. Among those who have already bought a copy are Martin Parr, Nadav Kander, John Gossage as well as many other famous photographers and lovers of photography books. PLAYGROUND was made without the help of a publisher, since publishers generally shy away from working with such a large format. It's a unique project which in the future will undoubtedly be considered a historical document. |
