The cover image of DAMn° 59 suggests that something quite marvellous has sprouted up in Dharavi, the slum of Slumdog Millionaire fame. In this impoverished Mumbai community, an avant-garde Design Museum has been established. The Dharavi museum is all about sharing local knowledge and social interaction, celebrating the wares of the residents and makers.
Also presented in DAMn° 59, amongst others, is a new, site-specific work called ‘America’, whereby Maurizio Cattelan has replaced a toilet in one of the museum’s public restrooms with a fully functional replica cast in solid gold. It makes available to the public an extravagant luxury product seemingly intended for the 1%. Viewers are invited to make use of the fixture individually and privately, allowing for an experience of intimacy with an artwork. The golden toilet offers a wink to the excesses of the art market while also evoking the American dream of opportunity for all, its utility ultimately reminding us of the inescapable physical realities of our shared humanity.
