Henk Schiffmacher – Photographer
Henk Schiffmacher – Photographer is the first extensive overview of Schiffmacher’s work as a photographer and, as the title suggests, is all about photography (and not tattoos). Featuring a wide selection of photographs taken between 1970 and 1985 in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Mumbai, Manilla, San Francisco and Kuala Lumpur a.o. one finds a raw mix of direct analogue shots on society in the 70’s and 80’s with a rich array of individuals showing off their best and worst features in front of Henk’s camera. You will find all sorts of different stories and people, joined together in a pattern that was Henk’s incomparably raw and curious sense of photography.
Picture after picture shows a unique personal insight into the magical world of youngsters, bikers, tattoo fetishists, legendary rock-stars, skinheads, Yakuza and many, many more. The wild mix of cultures, nationalities, habits and excesses against a backdrop of vintage cityscapes and timeless sceneries is captured in one single book, travelling back in time, feeling as if you’re there.
Henk Schiffmacher – Photographer is a brilliant display of Schiffmacher’s unique view of the world four decades ago: raw, pure, direct and unprecedented!
Henk Schiffmacher is a Dutch tattoo artist and cultural connoisseur based in Amsterdam. Known for his extraordinary energetic joie de vivre and out-of-the-ordinary tattoo styles he is always on the lookout for new add-ons to his oeuvre. Henk is a true artist by heart, with an experienced, rock and roll lifestyle he likes to keep things real and raw. The energetic and yet observational photography is what marks this piece of work. Exactly this is what his daughter Texas thought when she found the old 35mm negatives in a dusty drawer, knowing these had to be exposed for the world to see.
