Description

Mokum – A Guide to Amsterdam, explores the limits of freedom in this famous European capital.

Mokum – A Guide to Amsterdam: How liberal is the city? And how have the highly contested and conquered rights for women, homosexuals, housing, speech, expression and sexual freedoms been shaped by the current political climate? Are they all vivid and tangible in the city today? The guide provokes the user to explore, reinstate, question and analyze Amsterdam’s liberties in broadest sense. The design by Roosje Klap is inspired by the Dutch Free Press aesthetics from the 60’-s and 70’-s with each section (devotional city, protest city, liberty city, cappucino city, monumental city) based on a handmade silkscreen of a daily newspaper.

The guide contains maps, tours, stories, prose, essays and photos from over 40 contributors from poets and artists to geographers and architects, from Amsterdammers to New Yorkers, from the famous to the debutantes. After reading Mokum your view on the city will never be the same!
