Upstate Diary 15 – Harvesting Creativity | ‘The profoundly influential fashion designer Helmut Lang who walked away from a groundbreaking career, in 2005, to devote his life to art, shares his never previously featured country home along with an insightful conversation I had with him in an exclusive UD feature.

Casa de Vidro, executed in 1951, by the Italian-born starchitect Lina Bo Bardi, whose Modernist stance and myriad talents converged in the most spectacular fashion. Her home is a dream not to be missed!

We visit Venice Biennale artist Bosco Sodi at his home and his just opened contemporary art space Assembly where he exhibits work by artists he loves and admires. The former Buick showroom, in the small town of Monticello, is now a forum for bigger things, indeed, than automobile tail fins, as in “the construction of dialogues between the international art production and the local community.”

Lyle Ashton Harris has had a knack for being part of groundbreaking exhibitions from a young age. And he has not stopped inspiring generation of young photographers!

William Wegman may be best known for his legendary and often humorous photographs of his Weimaraner muses, but his work is more than images of dogs. We visit him in his country home.

The byline “Luc Sante” was one that smart readers were always happy to find in the New York Review of Books and on book covers, as does the byline “Lucy Sante,” which the writer has been using since transitioning to female in September 2021, at the age of 66.
