ZOO Magazine 69 – Chronicles

ZOO Magazine 69 – Chronicles | This issue is a celebration of our innately human capacity for storytelling, the power of the voice, mind and imagination to captivate and inspire. Encapsulated within 276 pages, ZOO Magazine hears from German Netflix star Lisa Vicari, lead of the award-winning series Dark, voicing her undying love of cinema and her reservations about the industry’s bias against women; Bryan Adams shoots and interviews James Norton in the actor’s London home, merged in his colorful and surprising anecdotes recalling a remarkable stint spent selling trees and renowned actor Numan Acar, celebrated for his iconic role in Homeland, shot by photographer Philippe Gerlach. Transitioning into the arts, a joint interview between abstract artist Paul Schrader and gallery owner Johann König takes on a philosophical tone, reflecting on the current time and its monumental effect on the art world; the Miedema Brothers delve into their intertwined practice and the stories that continue to influence and fuel their surreal and dream-like works, and contemporary artist Marcel Dzama intersects sinister atmospheres and humor, delicate romanticism and erotism, the role humanity played in the American elections and his continued activism.

Mediums become wonderfully blurred in this issue, through a mutual respect of the art of communication, embracing social issues as part of the wider narrative. In conversation with two of the 2020 laureates of the Cartier Women’s Initiative, Adriana Luna Diaz and Temie Giwa-Tubosun, issues of access to resources and healthcare shed light on the huge disparities that continue to exist; as part of ZOO’s continued focus on the natural world, non-profit organization Clear Rivers’ founder Ramon Knoester weighs in on plastic and waste devastating our precious ecosystem.

Issue 69 commits to open up dialogues unapologetically, spotlighting the infinite power of stories to connect and inspire. If our current time has taught us anything, it is the great potential, self-expression has reserved for change. With this optimism in mind, issue 69 sets the precedent for the new year, a continuation of the huge strides made in this turbulent period. At a time where isolation and restriction feel infinite and unnerving, stories provide a welcomed from of escapism, allowing us all to retreat into worlds so far away and yet so close.
